My new year’s resolution last year was to read more.  Or more accurately, to read, period. Truth be told, I never was much of a reader.  And it was something I was sort of embarrassed by.  I enjoyed a career in communications and writing before I came to the design world.  I was a avid consumer of words and media – just not usually hard bound in a book.  Magazines and periodicals, dotted with the occasional biography or self-help/professional development tome checked my box in the reading department.  But when I was invited to join a book club at the beginning of 2024, I accepted the challenge.

It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy reading, I just didn’t know where to begin in selecting what to read.  The choices were overwhelming and I didn’t have any accountability to stick with it.  A structured monthly schedule spoke to my methodical, plan-prone brain.  And I’m happy to say, a year later, I’ve knocked down a stack of more than 15 books and am already four books into this year’s reading list.  Next on my agenda?  To create a cozy spot to curl up and dive into the rest of them.

A cozy reading nook can be the perfect escape in your home—a place where you can unwind, dive into a good book, and enjoy a moment of peace. And when better that do claim that space than in the cold gray days of JanuFeb, where in Texas, when the weather dips below 60, we light the fireplace and grab a throw.

The beauty of a reading nook is that it doesn’t require a lot of space; with a bit of creativity, you can carve out a comfortable spot in any room. In this blog post, we’ll explore how you can use built-ins, storage solutions, and custom cabinetry to create the perfect reading nook in your home.

Choose the Right Spot: Finding Your Nook’s Home

The first step in creating a cozy reading nook is selecting the right location. Look for a spot in your home that feels naturally inviting and receives ample natural light. A corner of your living room, a space by a window, or even an unused area in your bedroom can make an ideal nook.

Once you’ve chosen the location, think about how you can make the space feel more intimate and secluded. Consider positioning a piece of furniture like a bookshelf or a tall plant to create a sense of enclosure. This will help define your nook and make it feel like a separate retreat within the larger room.

Incorporate Built-Ins: Maximize Space and Style

Built-ins are a fantastic way to add both functionality and charm to your reading nook. Custom built-in shelving can frame your nook, providing ample storage for books, magazines, and decorative items while giving the space a polished, integrated look. Built-ins can be tailored to fit the specific dimensions of your space, making the most of every inch.

Consider adding built-in cabinetry beneath your shelves to provide extra storage for blankets, pillows, or other cozy essentials. This not only keeps your reading nook tidy but also adds a layer of comfort, as you’ll have everything you need within arm’s reach.

Storage Solutions: Keep Your Nook Clutter-Free

A clutter-free space is essential for creating a relaxing reading nook. Thoughtful storage solutions can help you keep the area organized and serene. If you’re working with a smaller space, consider using floating shelves or wall-mounted storage to keep the floor clear and create an open, airy feel.

Cabinetry with doors is a great option for concealing items you don’t want on display, such as electronics or paperwork. If your nook is in a high-traffic area, using storage baskets or bins on your shelves can help you quickly tidy up and hide any clutter, maintaining a calm and inviting atmosphere.

Custom Cabinetry: Tailor-Made Comfort

Custom cabinetry can elevate your reading nook from a simple corner to a luxurious retreat. Custom cabinets allow you to tailor the storage to your specific needs, whether you require extra space for your book collection, a spot to store a reading lamp, or drawers to hide away odds and ends.

Consider incorporating a built-in bench with upholstered cushions as part of your custom cabinetry. This not only provides a comfortable seat but also adds hidden storage beneath the bench. Drawers or lift-up lids can store blankets, books, or other cozy accessories, keeping the space organized and clutter-free.

Add Personal Touches: Make It Your Own

Once your built-ins and storage solutions are in place, it’s time to add personal touches to make your reading nook truly your own. Start with comfortable seating—a plush armchair, a cushioned window seat, or a chaise lounge can all make excellent options. Layer the space with soft throws, pillows, and a rug to add warmth and texture.

Don’t forget about lighting! A reading nook needs good lighting, so consider adding a floor lamp, a wall-mounted sconce, or a stylish table lamp to create the perfect reading environment. Finally, personalize your nook with your favorite books, artwork, and decorative accents that reflect your style and personality.

Creating a cozy reading nook in any room is a rewarding way to enhance your home’s comfort and functionality, and a great way to wile away the winter days.  With a little creativity and organization, you can transform even the smallest space into a peaceful retreat and be well on your way to designing a reading nook that’s as stylish as it is inviting.
